Beer, that beautiful, life- and fun-giving substance that was obviously given to us by the gods. When it’s hot outside like it is now in Oklahoma, you could reach for water, but no good story ever started with “It was hot one day, so I grabbed a water bottle.” Thus, bringing us to beer, it’s important to go directly to the source for a really good beer. Breweries in Oklahoma are a relatively new experience for us, thanks to some prohibition-style laws that held on tight for way too long. I digress. In my experience with breweries, the best thing about them is that you can try multiple beers all in one swoop. The flight is a long-held tradition of brewery culture that allows you to taste a sampling of 3-6 beers, depending on the brewery. Building the flight is a scientific process that requires finesse and an understanding of beer styles and taste profiles. 

This segment will be referred to as the Eating OKC Flight of the Week. We start with a trip to Norman via Downtown OKC. No, we aren’t actually going to Norman because, like all good things in Norman, they came to Oklahoma City. Vanessa House Beer Company was started by five friends who were first introduced to craft beer at a house on Vanessa Drive in Norman, OK. As you walk into Vanessa House, it’s immediately clear that these guys are the embodiment of geek culture in all its glory. The art and decor all lend to a fun environment that says pull up, play a retro video game, and drink some really good beer brewed by people with a passion for beer. 

Let’s get into the flight. One of the benefits of going to a beer geek haven is when you describe what you want in beer terms, they understand. I asked for the ultimate summer beer flight. I want light and refreshing, I’m not big on IPAs, but I can handle a little hop here and there, and I want something interesting. Luckily, Vanessa House offers four beer flights, and here’s what they recommended: Reg A$$ Cider, 401K Cream Ale, Budget Wedding, and Payment Plan. Let’s get into each of these choices but in my opinion, it was the definition of a well-crafted flight.
