Eating on the jab: Tuna edition

So, I am a meat and potatoes and tacos and pizza and whatever else we talk about on this website that tastes delicious, but a lot of that stuff doesn't make you feel good when you are on a weight loss peptide. Thus my journey to eat cleaner, healthier foods. I will be sharing that journey with you as I go as it's kinda fun because while salad is healthy, no great story ever started with I was eating a salad. When I think healthy, I think fish and while there are a lot of boring bland fish dishes around, I will be on a journey to find the best of the best in the world of sea life. We start this journey with Tuna. Not the kind in a can, although there are some great canned tunas out there.

A story to kick it off and why Tuna holds a special place in my heart. The year is 2003 or somewhere around there, I don't know specifically. I am driving from Orlando, FL to Daytona Beach, Fl and decide to cut over and drive the coast. It's lunch time and in those years I admired a flame shirt spikey haired guy and was always on the lookout for America's greatest diners drive-ins and dives. I see a little hut of a restaurant right off the shore line and know that this is the spot. I walk in and look at the menu. In those days I had only really had tuna out of a can, so seeing a seared Tuna steak on the menu, I was intrigued. If you have ever experienced something that made the clouds open above your head and sun shine on your face, then you know what I experienced. It was life changing. So, now when I think of eating fish, I think of Tuna. While I do love Tuna sushi creations, this is not that story. We are going to dive into the non-tuna dishes in OKC that are outside the normal Spicy Tuna Roll you are used to.

The first Tuna dish that I have to mention because I eat it all the time is probably the most under rated and unknown tuna dish in town. The Seared Ahi Tuna Taco at Hacienda Tacos is magical ahi tuna, jicama slaw, and lime-cilantro red aioli. Simple, perfectly created and hits the spot every time. Plus, that Jicama Slaw that Chef Ervin does is good on everything.

Next we hit the lake for the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad at Hefner Grill. This salad makes me want to eat salad and is the only salad on the list. Get it, eat it, love it and feel good about yourself, and and it's a great view. There is something about sitting at lunch eating tuna and watching a bunch of mini sail boats play bumper cars, well that's what it looked like.

We swung over into a charming spot near Classen Circle for the Sesame Seared Tuna at The Hutch at Avondale which was akin to a Poke tower and I was all there for it. So good and so amazing served with rice crisps and that is always fun.

Of all the dishes I tried, this next one was one of the best surprises as you don't get a lot of really interesting food north of the Kilpatrick in the metro. La Loba Cantina & Grill came in hot with the Tostadas de Atun. This dish was near perfect dish that I can't wait to try again. The Tuna was amazing the chipotle aioli was a perfect compliment and it all just worked.

We round out our list with an absolute show stopper. I had to try a couple other things while at The Crown. Chef Eric Smith is the real deal. I knew it would be good based on the last dish I had from him last year at the 405vs918 competition. He did a Tuna watermelon dish that had my mouth so confused as to which was which. Today, we tried a dish from his current tasting menu, a compressed watermelon with chili oil and seared tuna that was not only beautiful, it was unsparingly delicious. I had to try the Ahi Tuna Nigiri that was one of the best bites I have had in a long time. But, we all came here for the Pepper Crusted Tuna Steak and damn. Serving it on a polenta cake made it stand out, the sauce the sear the love of the fish. I will be going back just for this on a very regular basis.

Did I hit all the tuna dishes in OKC? Absolutely not. Don't be a gate keeper, share those dishes with me please! I have to know as I have a lot more fish to eat.
