Flight of the week with Roughtail Brewing Co

Last Updated: July 25, 2024By

Time for another Flight of the Week, and I was excited for this one. Okay, I’m excited for pretty much all flights, but I digress. This week we venture a little north to Roughtail Brewing Company. If you like beer, you have probably heard of it because their most well-known beer, and quite possibly one of the most well-known beers in Oklahoma, is Everything Rhymes with Orange, AKA ERWO. If you haven’t heard of ERWO, it’s a delightful IPA with ample notes of orange citrus, making it very crushable on a hot day.

We can’t talk about Roughtail beers without talking about their story. I first experienced Roughtail in their tiny taproom on the outskirts of Midwest City. It wasn’t pretty; it was pretty rough, tucked back in an industrial park. Roughtail was started by home brewers who wanted to push beer forward and do something aggressive and unique. In those days, 10+ years ago, Oklahoma beer was safe, and safe is boring. Roughtail is definitely not boring. In 2020, as the world was shutting down, Roughtail Brewing Company was putting the finishing touches on their massive new facility and taproom. It was just in time because we all needed a beer around then. Spring forward a couple of years, and life has returned to as normal as we can get it. More importantly, Roughtail opened a kitchen serving fantastic burgers, wings, and other delicious food.

Let’s get to this flight because it was remarkable. We started with the Gecko’s Grotto, followed up with the Wit of the Wizard, then a very interesting Flumphernutter, and finished out with one of my new favorites, Magnetic Disturbance.

  • Gecko’s Grotto, a Dry Hopped Kölsch coming in at 4.5%. This beer is light and refreshing with its floral notes that are perky yet dry. It’s a fun beer to drink and a great start to a flight.

  • Wit of the Wizard, a Belgian Wit clocking in at 5%. Here we have a classic light and refreshing Belgian wheat-style beer that prepares you for a fun journey into the mystical arts.

  • Flumphernutter, getting weird with a Peanut Butter Jelly Sour, kicking it up a notch at 8.0%. Sours don’t get the credit they deserve, most likely because we have all had a sour beer that kicked us in the face with a brutal pucker effect. This isn’t that. You smell the peanut butter, then taste the jelly, are transported to your childhood, and then brought right back by the 8% kick to the face. In short, it’s a delightful trip.

  • Magnetic Disturbance, a Hazy IPA with Terpenes at a reasonable 6.8%. This beer is tropical and juicy with a very unique dankness. When I am looking for beer, my number one requirement is interesting, and this fits the bill. I am now craving another one. Anyone up for a trip to Roughtail?

There you have it, the story, the food, and most importantly, the beer that just soothes the soul. There is a lot to enjoy at Roughtail with 24 beers on tap, a fantastic kitchen, a festive atmosphere, and a very relaxing patio when it’s not a thousand degrees outside. Tell them I said hi, pet a dog, and tip the beer tenders well.
