The beer is dead, long live the beer

In the last couple years we have seen a sad shift in the beer world as brewery after brewery collapsed under the weight of several factors. The good news is, there are a few brave souls that have decided to take up the mantle and keep the beer flowing. Newest among these is a distinctly Oklahoma beer company that I was admittedly skeptical of while waiting for them to open. Lucky for me and you, they came out hard with some killer beer. Let me introduce you to Okie Beer Co.

Okie Beer Co. resides in the former home of Broke Beer, which is great because the bones of that place are fantastic. The wood paneling and chill inducing patio make this a spot to be reckoned with. It also happens to be in an area that I would consider an island in the Sea surrounded by nothing really all that great, but it gives you an opportunity for great beer without having to drive downtown. I had a fantastic conversation with Cody, Seth and Sam and it was clear that I was sitting among likeminded beer nerds that love the product, the process and the story.

The beer shines bright over here. They have a wide array of beer for most everyone, but are very clear that this is not a beer snob joint. They focus on drinkability, not how many pinecones you can fit into a glass. As a good writer should, I circumnavigated the list and had many great conversations throughout. There wasn’t a dull beer in the crowd, but they definitely had a few that caught my attention. The Honeysuckle Nectar Pilsner stole the show and is probably one of the best beers in OKC. This will surprise you when you drink it, but there is not a drop of honey in the barrel. It’s magic I tell you.

The other beers that stole the show and my heart are the Green Eyed Blonde which would stand tall against just about any other blonde in town. The Hillbilly Hefeweizen scores high on my list as an incredibly solid Hefe. Hazed & Amuzed their hazy IPA will have me coming back regularly in the summertime, and not just because of the name, it’s damn good. If you like Stouts, but hate when they are too much, and you know what I mean by that, too sweet, too rich, too strong, the Floating Cow Imperial is right down your alley. It’s everything I love in a stout without going too far, and it’s only 8.1% so it’s not as dangerous.

The other beers on tap are excellent as well, but I could go all day, instead I’ll say just go try them. I am personally looking forward to seeing them grow. Be sure to ask your favorite bar or restaurant if they have Okie Beer Co. on tap, and then say “well you’d be cooler if you did” if they say no.
